Hair like Clockwork

They say eyes are the window to the soul, but hair is the window to the inner you.

Just as much as the clothes you wear are a reflection of your inner style, personality, as is your hair. Everything you eat, drink, etc. will be reflected in your hair. While surfing the blog-o-sphere I came across a natural who shaves off her natural hair and starts fresh again every two years. This is a very daring feat because anyone knows if you take care of your hair correctly, hair can grow by leaps and bounds in two years.

Style Inspiration: The Roaring 1920's

The 1920's is hands down my favorite era. The 1920's was not just the birth of the great fashion with cloche hats, elaborate hair accessories and the 1920's marked the jump start of the Harlem Renaissance and the Jazz Age. What I wouldn't give to have been alive in the '20s living in good 'ole New York city. Imagine frequenting the same jazz clubs as the literary greats like Langston Hughes and Zora Hurston. Every time my mother and I read "A Dream Deferred," I felt like I had magically drifted back into yester-year.

Fashion during the 1920's was flashy. And in the height of black fashion was the drapper gentleman is all his glory. Women wore real fur coats and everything was well made.

Hair Woes: Natural chica, The Beginning

Big chopping my hair instead of doing a full transition from relaxed to natural was a very personal decision. My first time ever cutting my hair short was in 2010 when I opted for a bob cut. I was in my sophomore year of college and wasn't able to make the 45 minute drive across town every two weeks to get my hair done. I was doing it myself, or having one of my friends do it, and needless to say my hair was beginning to become damaged. The cut was liberating. For the first time I felt like I was in control of my hair, like I had a real say in my appearance.

Me, two days after doing my big chop.

Made in China? U.S. Olympic Uniforms

I was well aware of the hideous nature of the United States' 2012 Olympic Ralph Lauren uniforms. They look uptight and constricting. The over-fitted blazer and staunch hats look like they should represent France instead or the old Soviet regime instead of the land of the free, home of the brave. But to make matters worse, reports have surfaced that the uniforms were outsourced and made in China.

Swimmer Ryan Lochte, decathlete Bryan Clay, rower Giuseppe Lanzone and soccer player Heather Mitts, left to right, model the Team USA opening ceremonies uniform, created by Ralph Lauren and produced in China, for the London Games.

Motivational Mondays: Never Apologize #BossChat

The BOSS Network is community of entrepreneur and career women who support each other through online and event-based networking. Yesterday The Boss Network held a #BOSSChat on twitter giving 24 things a women should never apologize about. I really related to a lot of these points and they were exactly what I needed to hear. Here are a few of my favorites.

1. Never apologize for pursuing what makes you happy. Even if you need to quit your job, transfer schools or move. Always do what you really want.

2. Never apologize for giving your best in a relationship that just didn't work out.

3. Never apologize for being successful.

4. Never apologize for crying. Wear waterproof mascara and express yourself.

5. Never apologize for the 10 pounds you need to use. People who truly care about you will accept you as you are.

6. Never apologize for treating yourself to something special. Sometimes you have to show yourself some appreciation.

7. Never apologize for saying no... NEVER!!

8. Never apologize for demanding respect. You are to be treated like a queen.

9. Never apologize for changing your mind; it is your prerogative.

10. Never apologize for being YOU!!

Being one of those appreciators, I find myself researching those in the industry that I can learn from.

 Enter Bevy Smith.

10 on Style: Asia Jones

"Embrace your awkwardness."
-Asia Jones

10 on Style: Asia Jones
By Diamond Newman

Can you say, Facebook?  Thanks to this social media power player, I was introduced to the image and style of Asia Jones.  Asia is an 18 year old, Baltimorean with  the look of a hippie urbanite and the swag of a fancy tea-sipper. From talks of Rihanna’s ‘Tumblr Girl’ look to Baltimore’s need of fashion moderation, this pale skinned, Mexican-embroidery lover chatted everything, style.  What a delight, eh? With genuine style and personal thought, it was my gorgeous pleasure to give the swaggy Asia Jones….10 on Style.

  1. What are you wearing today?
Today, I am wearing my tannish, leather boots that I got from the thrift store, that I absolutely love, with my lace, black skirt that I made fishtail. On the top we have my red, floral, lace, Mexican-inspired, off the shoulder, cropped top. To top it all off, I have my black brimmed hat. Oh, I forgot about my gold necklace. Iced out. [Giggles]

  1. When you wake up, what is your styling process?
Really I just look at what is at the top of my drawer, unless I have an idea in my head, which I usually don’t. I’m not the type to pick out my clothes at night, and have it ready in the morning.  I just throw on whatever and hope it looks right, and if it doesn’t [look okay], I’ll switch a top or switch a bottom. I usually don’t match though, so it just comes together [Giggles]

  1. Describe your style in 5 words?
Hmm. That's a hard one. Funky. Edgy, Risky. Why are all these words ending with a "y." It's as I don't know any words. Uh, what's that word? Eccentric. Um, I need a fifth world. Um, I just try to make it flattering to... myself.

  1. How do others view your style?
A lot of people love it. A lot of people say, “Asia, I love your style. You dress so cute.”, and I’m like, “Oh, thank you.” But, people who are more closed-minded, those that don’t really see a lot of people trying different things, look at me like I’m crazy. They look at me like I’m country, or tacky, but I don’t pay them any mind.

  1. What are your “go-to”  shopping locations?
My favorite places to shop are thrift stores because ever since I started shopping at thrift stores, I’ve been extremely cheap. I like H&M and Forever 21. I like Urban Outfitters but their clothes are made so cheaply and it makes me angry. I also do a lot of online shopping. I like Etsy, and they also have a lot of vintage stores on E-Bay that a lot of people don’t know about.  Really, check them out. I just really like cute bargain shopping. I don’t like spending a lot of money on clothes; I’m not that flashy.

  1. What are your inspirations?
Solange. I love Solange. I love how she just wears anything. [Ed. note: Who doesn't?] I love her bush.  I love bushes. [Pulls Hair] Other inspirations? I would say my sister is a fashion inspiration, that’s when I started dressing different. Once she started, I would always wear her cloths. [Laughs].

  1. If you could be Baltimore’s only stylist, what would you have everybody wearing?
I want to see more conservative wear. I want to see more button-ups with  cute little jackets over top of them; high-waisted trousers and flats, that’s what I really like. I want people to look more natural; I want them to keep their faces natural and their clothing natural.  I like basic colors [but at the same time] I like putting different prints together that simply look crazy.

  1. What fashion/style icon would you say is simply overrated? Why?
[It would] most definelty be Rihanna. I mean I love Rihanna ‘s style, but I’m not liking this whole[pauses]….she’s looking like a ‘Tumblr Girl’ now. These hats, and these Jordans? I don’t know.  I don’t like tennis shoes personally, but I don’t understand why everyone now is trying to wear tennis shoes and snap backs.

Who else? Oh. I really don’t like Cassie’s style. Her style definelty doesn’t fit her. She definelty doesn’t pick out her own clothes. You can tell. You can tell when someone picks out their own clothes; [you can tell] when they don’t have a stylist.

I like Selena Gomez.  She’s so chic. And, definitely Emma Watson. Oh, and I’m not crazy about Lady Gaga. [She] is too much. She’s exaggerated. You can’t walk down the street in that kind of stuff.

  1. Hypothetically, you’re a Fashion Forecaster, what’s the next trend and where is it coming from?
Mexican Embroidery. [You know], like those long dresses and embroidered tops? [The trend is] going to come from blogs. And, I felt like I saw this tye-die, cut up jean stuff happen before it happened. I felt like I could see into the fashion future.

  1. What does style mean to you?
Style means being unique, being yourself, and not caring what other people think. Just being free. Not caring what anyone else has to say.  Put it on and feel good in it, and people are going to notice.

Fashion Maven: Brittany Byrd x The Online Vintage Store

Meet Brittany Byrd, owner of The Online Vintage Store.
Age: 23
Location: Baltimore, MD.

What made you start The Online Vintage Store?
I actually always wanted to own my own vintage store and so I really was just waiting for an opportunity to have enough cash to open a boutique. The reason it became an online store is one day on twitter, I tweeted "I'm gonna start an online vintage store" and it was retweeted by like 30 plus people. So I'm like oh shit maybe I really should! So I started a tumblr and then my good friend Lavon Wilkins says "Nooo, do a real site." And viola!

Describe the type of woman/girl that shops at The Online Vintage Store?
I don't really like to put a label or type on anyone, but if I had to say the type of girl that shops at The Online Vintage Store would be an eclectic being. One who doesn't follow the trend, but wars what she loves.

What types of items do you sell (clothing, accessories, shoes, etc)?
I sell women's clothing.

What's the process of finding clothes for The Online Vintage Store?
There isn't much of a process for finding the clothes. I basically just go to all my favorite thrift stores and vintage shops and choose things that I love. Process sounds so strategic. It's just basically me, just shopping (laughs).

What sets The Online Vintage Store apart from other boutique shops?
The Online Vintage Store is different from any other boutique because its completely me. Everything about the store is me. I choose what I like. I style it the way I want. I shoot the pics and arrange them how I want. The music that's on the site is always songs that I'm playing in the car OD tat week. There is nothing generic or copied about The Online Vintage Store.  I also like to give it a mom and pop feel. I truly appreciate my supporters and I love my supporters because they appreciate my artistic expression which is fashion and styling.

Describe your personal style?
Whoa! Umm... my style is funk, free, fabulosness! I'm always different when it comes to my choices like you will never know what you are gonna get!

Who are your favorite designers? Why?
Right now my fave designers are:
Hubert De Givenchy: He's an ultimate innovator. I'm no designer, but I definitely appreciate his eye for patterns
Alexander McQueen: For being over the top
Gianni Versace: His era in fashion was aaaammmmaaazzziiinnngggg

Motivation Mondays

"Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself."
                                                             -Rumi

I chose this quote for my first motivational Mondays quote because it is a quote that holds near and dear to my heart. I wear many hats: blogger, fashionista, advocate, daughter, friend, lover, yet over the years have found that my favorite hat has always been helping others. I enjoy teaching others, ending inequality and just plain lending a helping hand. What I have noticed to always hold true is that I have helped others the most only once I have helped myself. My ensuring I do the things I am suppose to do and need to do, I can lead others by example.

What have you done to lead by example today?

What's in a Name? YSL's Name Change

It's been more than a week since Yves Saint Laurent's infamous name change to Saint Laurent Paris. While the new creative director Hedi Slimane's decision to drop the "Yves" has been backed by Yves Saint Laurent's former lover and partner Pierre Berge, I wonder if the name change will hurt the iconic brand.

I am definitely an advocate of the saying, "If something isn't broken, don't fix it."From a PR aspect I can't image the name change will hurt the luxury brand too much. (Although it may baffle Generation Z-ers). It has definitely become a staple household name. But the still leaves me sad.

Check out these other companies that changed their names and remained successful:

Fashion 21, initially a middle-aged women's store, changed its name to Forever 21.

Polo Ralph Lauren Corp. dropped the Polo and became Ralph Lauren.

And in un-fashion related news, Opal Fruit became Starbursts.

Style Inspiration: Solange Knowles

While Solange Knowles' Twitter post about not being the "natural hair vice president" may be be true, I will still continue to lust over her natural hairstyles. I'm even considering playing around with kinky textured sew-ins to add some length to my coif. Here are a few of my favorite looks from Solange.
